vlc red hat VLC Media player puts up a red Christmas hat icon as an Easter egg in this festive season! If you are a VLC addict then you will have noticed this change as of Midnight 18 December. It seems as the developers from VLC decided to included this Easter egg on their later version 0.9+.

Checkout this screenshot.

Update 2:

Many people are complaining that vlc silently updates in background without user permission. But that’s not the case. VLC already stores this hat icon in the normal VLC package and doesn’t do any kind of update in the background.

Use the full display mode in the preferences to see it in full mode!

As cleaver as most Easter Eggs often are, this was pretty obvious. Still cool little feature added in, just in time for the holidays! :)

Noticed this too. Did the Google thing. Very cool little Easter egg (at Christmas...). This reminds me I need to play some older video games that change themselves around Christmas-time (different menus, logos, textures). It really is the little things that make software special. This feature in VLC probably took about two minutes to add in.

Oh, it was the cone. At first I though it was a puppy with a santa hat.
Funny how things looks so different when they're tiny, huh?

@Anonymous // 12/22/2010 2:47 PM: a very stupid comment. As an open source project VLC should really be religion independent. I am sure there were contributors from many different cultures and any discrimination should be avoided, even if it seems insignificant.

If you don't like it... then don't use the the FREE software. No one is making you use it. There are other alternatives you can use if this offends you so much. If you had to pay for it then you might have a right to say something, otherwise shut up and quit complaining.

BTW, Santa Claus is a SECULAR figure. He is not part of any particular faith, but can be claimed by everyone. The spirit of this season has always been of light and celebration, even before Christians took it over. Get with the spirit and don't be a Scrooge.

Lol, just noticed it, searched Google and found this. xD

Santa Claus was never mentioned in Christian Bible. Another misconception about Christmas.
