is it possible that in future its firmware be updated so that new format can be played?

Yes, Mp4 is not played on this, and also, from the tech head I did not get a proper answer for this. He told me to re convert to Divx/avi format to view the files/videos.
Please, if your requirement is for Mp4 please dont go for this product.

it play mp4 but not more than 720*576. works fine within the specified limits. the hd ting is just a marketing stunt but is fine for sdtv. check the tech specs in the manual for the exact limitations of the format support.
