This initiative from DoT was due to use of Chinese and other un-branded phones in the recent terrorist activity which almost shook the country. The low cost Chinese mobile phones imported in India will be impacted the most as these phones do not have unique IMEI number and they could not be identified. This same can happen on locally assembled mobile phones if they are without a valid IMEI number.
How to Locate IMEI number on your Mobile
IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is unique 15 digit identification number of the Mobile Handset.It is automatically transmitted by the phone when the network asks for it. You can check the IMEI number by pressing *#06#.
Or you can check IMEI by removing the battery and locating a white sticker which will contain the IMEI number.

file a complaint in the police cyber cell with your phone's imei number. They will be able to trace it.

I HAV BEEN GIVEN THe address of the AD at cst which was closed today . there wer many at the centre but shop was closed. we wer not able 2 check the IMEI and submit the docs. i think the ample time should be given to check the validity or the dealers should be given this task so to avoid inconvienence to the the users,
it is unfair with that user who fail to implant the new IMEI number because of some reason & still network service of that user barred from network then in that situation what would be the next procedure???????????
