Nokia finally replaces all 46 million defective batteries

The mobile phone giant NOKIA had announced that it would replace all 46 million BL-5C batteries manufactured between December 2005 and November 2006. The batteries manufactured by its Japanese supplier Matsushita received around one hundred complaints globally of overheating while charging.

This recall could cost Nokia over 563 crore rupees in India. Nokia had made it clear to the customers that to get replacements, an online form has to be filled in, followed by a 10 day waiting period for processing the information before a replacement would be mailed to the customer.

Nokia has also opened an online support for replacing batteries.

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

The BL-5C batteries which are subject to the product advisory were used with the following Nokia models or separately as accessories:
